Raymond's Restaurant, 212-815 Cloverdale Avenue, Victoria B.C - - (250) 380-1881

YES! We gave Raymonds another shot at cracking the pot. One more chance to prove they can roll with the big boys. An opportunity to say "HEY. THATS RIGHT. WE ARE STILL HERE."

Does "Hey we fucking suck" translate into "HEY. THATS RIGHT. WE ARE STILL HERE?"
No right? It's still no? O.K good. So check out the picture below. It's a review from 2003 when the general media still had the resources to review food on a regular basis, and when Raymond's still had a reason to have their name printed alongside something called "Best in the City." Since then the place has deteriorated, or at least that was the impression I got the other evening when I got downright fleeced by Raymond's on Blanshard.

These cheapo's even had the audacity to put sweet and sour sauce in its own food tray. Sweet and sour sauce. I mean come on. It's dinner time and I'm paying fifteen bucks. I haven't even begun to mention the lack of decent items that could have redeemed that lazy and downright rude dinner item.

One thing that Raymond's has really stepped up to the plate on is their offering of Dim Sum in a buffet setting; something that is rarely, if ever done in the local buffet community. The shrimp balls were decent, while the ground pork tasted a lot like the kind they serve on the Swartz Bay ferry buffet.
But other than that, you really have to be a nice person to give Raymond's any accolades. While the sweet and sour pork was above average, many of the items were not being replaced quickly enough at a very busy time in the dinner rush. I'm sorry, I'm just really not that into overcooked chicken wings as my buffet highlight.

The spring rolls were decent and the fried squid was average and palatable; however, every thing else was just boring and did not justify the high price. I thought this was dinner at Raymond's, not lunch time in Port Alberni.

It's really weird how if one thing isnt going for something, then something else is going for it to make up for it, a little. The service was actually good today. Raymond's used to be classic for their shitty rude service and amazing greasy food. I still think there's some psychologist or philosopher out there who can prove there is a relationship between bad food with good service and good food with bad service.

This visit was a shock because I went here a year ago for dinner, and I have to tell you, Raymond's was back on the map.

Price for Dinner: $14.99 + tax
2/5

I was there this afternoon and the service was awful, the food wasn't stocked at all even though the buffet was to be open for another hour.

The other Raymond's on Admiral's Rd, across from the Scotiabank, used to be much better than Cloverdale but then went out of business after the owner died. I agree that the Cloverdale Raymond is awful, a real clip-joint. The Chinese buffet at Burnside and Harriet was going great guns but seems to have closed down for a few weeks (ca. Oct. 5, 2009) for repairs in the kitchen. Very nice staff, including the exceptionally capable and industrious manageress.

I visited Raymond's Blanchard location for lunch a couple of weeks ago. Suffice to say, I won't do that again!
